Toyota introduced the concept of the latest generation Corolla at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, highlighting futuristic design as well as more diverse Drive Technologies.
The company insists on a focus on more efficient hybrids and high-performance engines for the GR sport variant.
The concept model features a combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor as well as a turbo engine unit for the Gazoo Racing (GR) variant, confirming Toyota's multi-powertrain strategy. The Japanese automaker said the new platform will be flexible for ICE, hybrid, and EV.

More efficient Hybrid systems

The new generation Corolla uses a hybrid configuration that combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with a 30 kW electric motor. In total, this configuration produces about 134 hp of power, with a power share of 94 hp from the gasoline engine and an additional about 40 hp from the electric motor.
Toyota claims fuel efficiency increases between 10-20 percent compared to current hybrid models.
The 1.5-litre engine is also designed to be lighter and more flexible; it can be turbocharged and allows for an all-wheel-drive configuration via an additional electric motor on the rear axle.

395 HP GR Turbo engine for Performance variant

For the performance market, Toyota is preparing a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine that will fill the Gazoo Racing (GR) variant.
This engine replaces the 1.6-liter three-cylinder unit on the current GR Corolla and is capable of producing up to 395 hp, with a claimed smoother operation.
Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota's Chief Technology Officer, said in an interview, affirming the company's commitment to internal combustion engines amid the electrification transition.

Futuristic design and flexible Platform

The concept Corolla features a low-slung body with aggressive yet functional design lines. The new generation Platform is designed to be compatible with a wide range of powertrain types, including EV, hybrid, and ICE.
The flexibility of this platform allows Toyota to develop different variants on the same base, laying the foundation for the company's multi-powertrain strategy to meet the needs of a diverse global market.
Toyota has not yet announced an official production date, but analysts expect the model to be available for the global market in the 2027-2028 model years. The hybrid variant is projected to highlight efficiency, while the GR version promises high performance.
